Lotz of Music

Live at JazzCase

elNegocito Records eNR 071

Accomplished in nuanced virtuosity when playing multiple transverse instruments, American Robert Dick and German Mark Alban Lotz bring their flute collection and singular approach to improvisation to these group sessions. Although both move among many musical genres, Lotz’s quintet session is anchored to Jazz while Dick and associates create a dozen expert but unvarnished improvisations.

Eclectic as one can be in this setting, Lotz and his mostly Netherlands-based group ensure that the proper combination of backbeat and lyricism is emphasized during eight Lotz compositions. Besides the composer’s flutes, the band is pianist Albert van Veenendaal, cellist Jörg Brinkman, percussionist Alan “Gunga” Purves plus guest, Swiss clarinetist Claudio Puntin. An ad-hoc meeting among virtuosos, Solar Wind also features French double bassist Joëlle Léandre and American koto player Miya Masaoka. MORE

Raise the River

RogueArt ROG 0080

More than any other description, especially when it comes to the arts, the phrase “beyond category” is overused. Except that is when it comes to Robert Dick and the flute. Over the past 40 years the New York native has played every variety of the transverse instrument from piccolo to contrabass, making inroads as he established himself in improvised, notated and so-called ethnic musics. His adroit craftsmanship is on show on these duo sessions, one of which oscillations on the thin line that separates New music from Free music; the other of which brings in the faintest whiff of Rock-styled inferences. Hans Tammen Third Eye Orchestra

Live At Roulette
Innova 225

Expanding his electro-acoustic expertise to a creation for large ensemble, on this CD German-born, New York-based endangered guitarist Han Tammen presents two mesmerizing suites from his 13-piece Third Eye Orchestra.

Apparently unfazed by the superstition about 13, Tammen doesn’t perform, but instead conducts and arranges in real time. Likewise ignoring the superstitious angle, some of Manhattan’s most accomplished and innovative musicians – and one ringer – handle with aplomb Tammen’s creation which calls for equal facility with improvisation and notated music, acoustic instrumental techniques and familiarity with electronic excursions. Although billed as two, six-part versions of the same piece – “Antecedent” and “Consequence” – it’s a tribute to all concerned that neither version mirrors the other. While the separately titled tracks exhibit certain homogeneity, soloists never eschew individuality even while blending with the others in section work or contrasting passages. MORE

A.D.D. TRIO

Sic Bisquitus Disintegrat
Enja ENJ-9361

No innocents abroad, the members of the A.D.D. Trio are three experienced English-speaking musicians who choose to live in Continental Europe.

Bakers rather than cooks, the three have blended spoonfuls of improv, jazz, classical and New Music with some pinches of funk and rock onto this cookie sheet of original sounds. When that cookie crumbles -- bisquitus disintegrat -- what results is a torte, honeyed enough for the occasional sweet-fancier, but with enough tang and personality to impress the sophisticated nibbler.
